Yoko, the hotel-dwelling gourmet hunter, @foodie_yoko here! I live in hotels and eat out 365 days a year.

I had the dinner buffet at Compass, the restaurant in Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers!

My room review of Yokohama Bay Sheraton is here:

COMPASS Dinner Buffet

Compass is on the 2nd floor of Yokohama Bay Sheraton.

This time I stayed on a plan that included both the dinner and breakfast buffets, and my parents came along, so dinner was for the three of us ^^

The buffet at Compass has an unusual "order buffet" concept: in addition to the food at the buffet stations, there are dishes you order from your smartphone!

Elaborate dishes like sushi, sukiyaki and pastry-wrapped bakes, and all the alcohol, are ordered by smartphone.

It looks big enough for over 100 seats, and there are plenty of buffet stations, so there is a lot to pick from, lol.

The Buffet Stations at Compass

This is the appetizer section.

Beet, apple and walnut salad; tender steamed chicken and wild rice salad with ethnic dressing; mushroom and artichoke marinade with sherry vinegar; caponata and mixed bean stew; smoked salmon and avocado salad.

Quite elaborate dishes are lined up.

This is the hot dishes section: cod pil-pil, pasta made in a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano (with Genovese or tomato sauce), deviled-style chicken with romesco sauce, braised hamburg steak baked with cheese, and more.

Dinner at Compass

Each of us filled our plates... let’s eat!

Starting with the appetizers! I want to try a bit of everything, so I put just a little of each on my plate, lol.

For the salad, extra cherry tomatoes, which I love to death.

Many of the appetizer salads are elaborate, and I was very happy with them.

This is the sukiyaki I ordered! It arrives as raw meat, so you get to enjoy cooking it yourself!!

I love that you can cook it exactly the way you like!

This is the roast beef from the buffet station! A beautiful pink and absolutely delicious!

Sushi from the order menu! The freshness was no issue and it was delicious. The rice is seasoned with red vinegar.

This is tempura. Honestly, I might prefer having it at a tempura restaurant, lol.
But there is a variety of ingredients and salts!

Pasta made in Parmigiano Reggiano, with tomato sauce
This is cooked fresh at a live cooking station, and I highly recommend it!

They hollow out a big wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano like a bowl, toss the pasta in it so it gets coated with the cheese, and then top it with tomato sauce!

The Genovese version was delicious too.

If you have to choose between tomato sauce and Genovese, I recommend the Genovese!

Ramen, of all things! I wonder if the noodles are hand-kneaded (?). They are wide and slightly curly, and the result was not to be underestimated.

Braised hamburg steak, shumai (steamed dumplings), cod pil-pil and karaage (fried chicken). This is Yokohama, so you always feel like having some Chinese food.

Desserts at the Compass Dinner Buffet

I got full faster than expected and went looking for desserts...

This is the mini cake section: crème caramel (pudding), profiteroles, strawberry mousse cake, panna cotta, shortcake, chestnut cake, cheesecake and more. Quite a spread ⭐︎

And I found a station serving freshly made crêpes!

I love that they cook each crêpe one at a time after you order!

There are lots of crêpe toppings, too: chocolate sprinkles, strawberries, bananas, mixed berries, chestnut and more. Just ask the chef and they will add them for you ^^

Here I realized I hadn’t had the tantanmen (spicy sesame noodles) yet, so I added it last minute! It has nuts on top, so it feels authentic.

The desserts aren’t only cakes; there is fruit too. I got melon, pineapple, kiwi and red grapefruit. Grapefruit refreshes your mouth, so I always eat it if a buffet has it!

Apple pie and a café au lait. Drinks like café au lait are all-you-can-drink from the machine!

Finally, cheesecake and shortcake.

Shortcake is rarely a miss, so you can eat it with confidence, lol.

Who Should Try the Buffet at Compass

Yokohama Bay Sheraton is close to the station and the restaurant is spacious, so I think it works for anyone, whether couples or families.

I’ve had buffets at all kinds of hotels, but I’ve never seen an order-style buffet like Compass, so it may be fun if you haven’t tried one.

There are also quite a few live-kitchen items finished on the spot, like pasta and crêpes, so if you’re tired of ordinary buffets, I hope you’ll give it a try!
