Chop House, Sydney: Steak Night

Translated from my original Japanese post (2019). 日本語の原文を読む →

Salut! It's Yoko, the food blogger who eats her way around the world.

Yes, it's been a while since my last update. The thing is, I still haven't finished the Australia series...

I'm so sorry to everyone who's been looking forward to it!

I'll do my best to post more this month!

So, last time I wrote about Ayers Rock and how it wore my body out, and the Australia series continues here.

After Ayers Rock we moved on to Sydney! First stop: steak.

CHOP HOUSE

Maybe steak is popular with Sydneysiders (?).
Most Australia guidebooks list steakhouses as something "you should eat in Sydney."

I saw Prime Steakhouse in a lot of guides and thought about going, but
it was pretty expensive and over my budget, fine dining sounded like too much when I was tired and covered in sand, and I wanted somewhere I could go without dressing up.

So I chose a place called CHOP HOUSE.

I booked in advance through CHOP HOUSE's official website.

The atmosphere at CHOP HOUSE

When we walked in, it was almost full! The lighting is kept low, giving it a slightly upscale feel.

The place was buzzing with Sydney office workers.

Almost everyone was wearing a jacket, so it felt more formal than I expected.

The service is fairly friendly. A couple next to us, who seemed to be regulars, chatted happily with the staff for a long time,

but with us it was polite and fairly neutral.

Maybe my English isn't great (does it sound too polite?), or maybe it's because we obviously looked like tourists...?

It would have been nice if they had shown a bit more interest in us.

The menu at CHOP HOUSE

Here's the menu.

The wine is on the pricey side. Besides Aussie beef, they also have WAGYU.

To start, a glass of full-bodied red to go with the steak.

Bread and a plate. The plate just has the restaurant's name on it, but it's somehow stylish.

Before the steak, tartare first!

It's spicy with a Korean-style flavor. Break the egg yolk and eat it together and it turns mellow... so good.

And now, the long-awaited bone-in steak!

So thick!

I had the filet steak. Without a side dish, the plate looked a bit lonely, lol.

Steak calls for fries, of course, so I added some.

As a fries fanatic, I can't do without them.

The fries are neither too thin nor too thick, elegant yet satisfying.

I cut into the steak, seasoned with just salt and pepper... and took the first bite.

Look at this lean meat! Juicy, with the flavor of the beef overflowing... I can't resist it.

It was a little mild though, so I summoned the wine sauce!!

At times like this, being passive doesn't work.

Seek deliciousness greedily. And it shall be given unto you!

The wine sauce wasn't very rich; it had a light, thin texture.

I would have liked to try it with a punchier sauce or relish.

Other tables had a variety of sauces out, so if you're going, check for that.

The dessert menu.

I ordered a gloriously junky chocolate sundae.

A classic-style sundae with a cherry on top.

I poured on loads of chocolate sauce and left completely satisfied!

The bill for two was A$205 (1 AUD is about ¥80).

Two glasses of wine each, sides, and a tasty steak... pretty decent value, I'd say!

It's about a 10-minute walk from the area packed with hotels, so it's very convenient.

If you want to have steak in Sydney but don't want anywhere too fancy, and you want to keep it quick and close to your hotel, do check it out!!
