Toritsudaigaku Takeout and Delivery Favorites
Translated from my original Japanese post (2020). 日本語の原文を読む →
Salut! It's Yoko, busy with daily remote work and hunting for tasty takeout!
I've put together takeout information for popular places around Toritsudaigaku Station, so if you live nearby, I hope it helps!
10 shops listed as of 5/24. Every one of them is delicious and recommended.
Cantina Carica.ri
The first takeout I got after COVID kept us out of restaurants was from Cantina Carica.ri, a super popular Italian place near Toritsudaigaku Station!
This is the 10-item appetizer set.
I'd already eaten some, lol

Warm-vegetable bagna cauda, prosciutto cotto with tonnato sauce, white fish fritto, roast beef, liver pate, piccata, and more.
The sweet potato in the warm vegetables was incredibly moist. The meat was juicy and fantastic.
I recommend it if you want plenty of protein and vegetables.

By the way, when I ordered the 10-item set for takeout, they gave me 2 boxes.
I assumed one box was for one person, ate one, then opened the other box to find completely different items inside, and I was bummed for hours...
If you order, open both boxes at the same time! lol
I've also heard a rumor that sometimes they throw in a few extra dishes...

This is the sardines alla siciliana. I appreciate that the breadcrumbs come separately so you can enjoy their crunch.
It's great that a little side dish is included too.

A soup packed with vegetables. It comes with fragrant olive oil and Parmigiano to finish.
Buying and chopping a bunch of different vegetables is surprisingly hard work, so this is a welcome menu item.
Order by phone. The menu is posted on Instagram.

Buranko
A bento from the soothing Japanese izakaya Buranko.
The food at Buranko is gently seasoned, and I never get tired of it no matter how many times I eat it.

It has classics like shiitake shumai and scallop croquettes, as well as unusual items like salt-grilled herring (with roe).

This is the bento plus snack set, packed into a stacked jubako box.
The packaging that takeout requires is used once and thrown away, so it's not eco-friendly at all.
So I checked with Buranko, and since they said it would help, I brought my own container.
I think it's fine as long as it doesn't inconvenience the shop.
Check the menu on Instagram. You can get takeout of almost the same menu as usual.

Toshi Au Coeur du Pain
Toshi Au Coeur du Pain is highly regarded as having the best baguette in Tokyo.
I hear some people come to Toritsudaigaku just to buy a baguette...
They seem to have originally sold by mail order, and now in addition you can buy early in the morning with no reservation (basically over the counter), and reserve bread sets for daytime.
The early-morning sale is 6:30-7:30 (Wednesday to Sunday), when baguettes, pain au chocolat, croissants, and more are available.

I went at 7:00 that day, and three customers came within 5 minutes before and after me, so it's very popular!
The croissants I wanted were sold out, so I couldn't get them (sob).
The brioche I got. Fluffy! Eaten with the little bit of sugar on top, it's like a snack.

This is my favorite, pain au chocolat! I eat it for breakfast.

It's big, full of butter, and rich.
The menu for the daytime bread sets can be found on Instagram.

Pukuichi
Famous for Fuchu-yaki, Pukuichi. Besides Toritsudaigaku, they have a shop in Sangenjaya too.
It seems most of the menu has been available for takeout for a while, but this was my first time getting omu-soba and Fuchu-yaki to go!

I worried the crispy noodles, the defining feature of Fuchu-yaki, would go soggy, but they were still crispy!
The mild Carp sauce makes the flavor. The peppery spiciness is nice, and it's delicious.
It takes 20 minutes to cook, so I recommend reserving by phone.

bistro nid
Bistro nid serves stylish, creative French food. I took out a fish bento and a meat bento.
The meat bento was a coarsely ground hamburger steak with plenty of spices, cooked rare. It had a wild flavor, as if it contained lamb, and went well with the spicy sauce. The sides were moist small potatoes and something like coleslaw.

The fish bento had rare salmon on top of penne and taro in a distinctive cream sauce, nicely grilled. Dill and dried tomatoes were added too, and the aroma and colors were lovely!

The takeout presentation is just as stylish as their usual lunch and dinner.
When I moved it onto a plate, the presentation got a bit messed up. My bad, lol
There were salads and other items too. You can reserve through Instagram DMs, which is handy.

DELI more Hand
Takeout from DELI more Hand, which serves handmade side dishes.

As a deli specialist, they have an enormous variety of dishes.

There's also a corner inside where you can eat in.

Prices come in 3 patterns depending on the number of mains. This time I chose the "regular" with one main.

The main was ebi katsu (breaded fried shrimp) (+¥150). Plus tomato-stewed three beans, braised cabbage, mixed pickles, and a vegetable omelet. It comes with brown rice.

The ebi katsu was fried after I ordered, and it was crispy. It came with homemade tartar sauce.

You can see what the bento look like on Instagram.
You can see the day's main dish on Twitter.
Hello.
The state of emergency in the Tokyo area may be lifted soon.
But let's not let our guard down, and keep up the precautions 💪
We're open until 7 p.m. today as well.
We look forward to seeing you. pic.twitter.com/h1QcmLRpTH— DELI and more HAND (@DELI_HAND) May 22, 2020

Little Chef
Takeout from Little Chef, a cafe popular for Japanese set meals, quiche, and pudding.

Takeout is by phone reservation by 5 p.m. the day before, with pickup Friday through Monday.
That day's bento was ¥1,600.

Rice with ginger and fried tofu (aburaage)
Kinpira (stir-fried burdock and carrot)
Asparagus dressed with canned tuna and yukari (red shiso seasoning)
Deep-fried okra and kabocha squash
Broccoli and turnip pickled in miso
Seasoned soft-boiled egg
Fried red onion, curry-flavored
Chikuwa (fish cake) isobe-age (seaweed tempura)
Fried eggplant sandwich with sweet-and-sour sauce
(There was no explanation of the menu, so this is my guess. It should be mostly right, lol)
The most interesting was the turnip and broccoli pickled in miso. The crisp texture of the vegetables was a pleasure and the miso flavor was strong.
I'm a fried-food fanatic, so I was happy there was a lot of fried stuff, lol
A pudding with a cute round lid.

One scoop~

The caramel is pleasantly bitter and the sweetness is restrained, a grown-up flavor!
You can get a peek at what's in the takeout bento on Instagram.
Sometimes they post the cooking process on Stories too, which is fun.

Torikei
Takeout from Torikei, a popular yakitori restaurant in Toritsudaigaku.

Yakitori really tastes better eaten at the restaurant, I think...
But I was so starved for yakitori that when they started takeout, I did a little dance, lol

A 5-skewer set (x2)
I couldn't choose the types, but I got my favorite, tsukune with cartilage. Lucky! I love the smell of charcoal.
Oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl).

Chicken katsu don.

White-miso stew of chicken offal.

A gentle white miso flavor. I was happy it had lots of scallions. They came separately so they stayed crisp.
I went around 6 p.m. and waited about 30 minutes, so I'd recommend reserving by phone in advance.

malaccabar
A super popular spot in Toritsudaigaku, a Thai restaurant with a reputation for being very delicious.
Malacca Bar's takeout is
lunchtime over-the-counter sales from 11:30 (Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday, Sunday) until sold out, no reservations (2 items per person), and
dinner sales from 17:30 (Wednesday to Sunday, reservation required).
Reservations are taken by phone at 03-5701-3755 from 2 p.m.
That day I went at lunchtime around 11:45.
About 20 people were lined up and I waited 30 minutes and barely got some,
so if you want to be sure of getting takeout, I recommend going before they open.
The packaging with a cute sticker.

This is the pad thai. A generous portion, which makes me happy~
The chili seasoning comes separately, so you can adjust the spiciness.

Green curry. Packed with eggplant, my favorite. The spiciness is just right.

ICHI no SAKA
ICHI no SAKA is on Meguro-dori: leave Toritsudaigaku Station, walk left to Meguro-dori, and cross to the other side.
The inside is spacious and well ventilated.

A few people were dining in.
You can see the takeout menu on ICHI no SAKA's official website.
I went to the shop and ordered, and waited about 20 minutes, so it may be better to reserve by phone.
There's an Amabie on the bag, lol Cute! (Amabie is a Japanese folk spirit said to ward off epidemics.)

The main and rice come in a quite sturdy container.

This time I took out the grilled king salmon! ¥1,600.
The rice is five-grain rice. Chewy.

The king salmon is quite thick... Capers and tomato underneath. About half a tomato's worth.

Grilled zucchini, eggplant, carrot (sweet!), turnip, cauliflower, and broccoli.
I tend to run short on vegetables and fish unless I make an effort, so it was a very welcome lunch.
