Mishuku Toraji, Yutenji: The Toraji-Yaki Is a Must

Translated from my original Japanese post (2018). 日本語の原文を読む →

Hi! It's Yoko, a loin person when it comes to yakiniku (grilled beef).

I'm conscious of calories, so I don't usually go for yakiniku all that often, but...

- Charcoal grilling
- Fresh meat
- A good selection of Korean dishes like chijimi (savory pancakes)

If a place meets those conditions, I'll go once in a while.

Yesterday I found a delicious yakiniku restaurant that meets them for the first time in a while, so let me tell you about it!

It's "Mishuku Toraji" in Yutenji!

It's about a 5-minute walk from Yutenji Station.

The restaurant has sunken kotatsu-style seating, counter seats and semi-private rooms.

Here's the menu.

There's a wide variety of offal (horumon), though it's not my thing!

They also have Korean dishes like chijimi and japchae.

First, the kimchi. Mild on the spice and really good.

A heaping plate of tomatoes with Korean-style seasoning.

The liver. No gaminess at all, and soft and fluffy.

Sagari (hanging tender). I asked for a cut with plenty of lean meat, and they recommended this one, which I'd never had before.

It's from the diaphragm, so technically it's classed as offal, but it really is very lean!

In English it's apparently called "hanging tender," because the diaphragm hangs from the organs.

It's tender and mild! Nothing like offal.

Toraji-yaki (with green onion sauce)

This is my top pick!

It has more bite than the sagari and plenty of marbling.

The cut is outside skirt steak. I assumed skirt would be greasy, but not at all!

Look at this cross-section and imagine how juicy it is!

The beef's richness and the green onion sauce together were pure bliss.

Heart (half-eaten, lol). I'd never had yakiniku with a miso sauce, so I gave it a try.

The slightly charred miso and the springy heart go together perfectly!!

I finished with seolleongtang, a soup made by simmering beef bones for a long time.

I really wanted the chijimi and stone-pot bibimbap too, but I held back (lol).

I'll save them for next time (lol).
