Horse Mackerel and Grapefruit Marinade
Translated from my original Japanese post (2018). 日本語の原文を読む →
Hi, it's Yoko, your food blogger.
Today I'm sharing my top recipe for the day you host a party at home: horse mackerel and grapefruit marinade!
It's really, really easy. You just slice everything and let it sit in the marinade.
But it looks so elegant, it almost feels like cheating (lol).
I simply love it and make it often. It's great for parties, but also for any day you feel like whipping up something quick.
Horse Mackerel and Grapefruit Marinade

Ingredients (serves 2)
Grapefruit...1
Red onion...1/2
Dill (if you have it)...to taste
★Marinade
Grapefruit juice...4 tbsp
Vinegar...4 tbsp
Olive oil...4 tbsp
Salt and pepper...to taste
Directions
1. Peel the grapefruit and cut out each segment, separating them from the membranes. Slice the red onion thinly along the grain and toss it with the marinade.
2. Fillet the mackerel into three pieces. Remove the bones, peel off the skin, and slice it on the diagonal to match the size of the grapefruit segments.
3. Arrange the mackerel and grapefruit on a plate and spoon over the red onion and marinade. Garnish with dill and you're done.
Tips
Freshness is everything with mackerel!
If you buy sashimi-grade mackerel, you can skip the filleting, but freshness is key!
If the fish has been sitting around, it still smells fishy even after soaking in vinegar... (sob) I speak from experience.
Since it's the star of the dish, it's worth being picky about freshness.
If you can, buy it whole and fillet it into three pieces yourself!
Use two colors of grapefruit to make it party-ready!
One color of grapefruit tastes just as good, but two colors look so much more festive, which is perfect for a home party.
Dill is an herb that goes beautifully with fish. You can skip it, but with it the dish looks like something from a restaurant (lol).
Recommended wine
This recipe is also featured at Lekker Africa, a shop that sells South African wine.
I contribute wine comments and recipes there, and for this mackerel and grapefruit marinade I recommend Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc.
It's a white wine made from the Chenin Blanc grape, with a fresh, apple-like aroma.
I wrote a short explainer on South African wine below, so have a look if you're curious.
